Be Expert With Map & Compass : The Complete Orienteering Handbook, by Bjorn Kjellstrom
Buy this paperback ($13.60)
This book teaches everything (and we mean everything) that you need to know to find your way with map and compass - or with either one alone. Whether you plan to spend time in the backcountry or plan to spend time in orienteering competition, this is an important book to read and study. Includes exercises and illustrations. Oh, for those who don't know, Orienteering is the sport of traveling through the backcountry with map and compass finding a series of checkpoints along route - it's not a big sport in the USA, but it's huge in parts of Europe!

An excellent guide that does just what it should...
NOLS Wilderness First Aid, by Tod Schimelpfenig, Linda Lindsey
Buy this paperback ($11.96)
This book was designed as a course text to accompany the NOLS wilderness first aid curriculum. A complete set of medical topics is covered: patient assessment, shock, soft tissue injury, burns, fractures and dislocations, chest head and abdominal injuries, heat/cold/altitude problems, poisonous plants and animals. General health related topics are covered as well, including: athletic injuries, hygiene, hydration, dental emergencies and rescuer stress. An excellent resource and overview of situations and treatments and useful for everyone's outdoor library and/or tucked in the backpack or kayak. However, as the text mentions, this book is not a substitute for thorough, practical training and experience at a WFR course such as those offered by SOLO
