Get into the Backcountry! Come Climb and Ski with Us! |
|
| For the complete novice student or the experienced climber who requires additional training, Aspen Expeditions/ Rocky Mountain Climbing School (RMCS) offers the full spectrum of state-of-the-art professional instruction. With emphasis on safety and enjoyment, our informative teaching progressions and low student/guide ratios assure maximum attention which each individual deserves. | |
| FROM THE GROUND UP Introductory Rock Climbing | |
| Beginning with movement on rock with exercises and Bouldering techniques, the student then learns the rope handling/security system (proper use of harness, knots, belaying techniques, anchors and rappelling). The time-proven RMCS philosophy of Learn by Doing! builds self confidence with extensive top-rope belayed climbing on the magnificent granite crags of Independence Pass, just minutes from downtown Aspen. | |
| FREE CLIMBING Intermediate/Advanced Rock Climbing | |
| The goal of FREE CLIMBING is to develop climbers whose skills qualify them as reliable, self-sufficient climbing partners. Setting and equalizing anchors on multi-pitch climbs will ultimately create the skills necessary for "leading" a rock climb of appropriate difficulty. Consistent with the RMCS program, the student will also expand his level of self-rescue skills, employing such techniques as "aid" climbing and simple "hauling" systems. | |
| PEAK EXPERIENCES Mountaineering & Technical Climbs | |
| The Elk Range of the Rocky Mountains offers some of the best mountaineering and technical climbs on 14,000 ft. peaks. Ranging from conditioning "hikes" up Mt. Sopris to technical routes on Capitol Peak, Pyramid Peak and the Maroon Bells; RMCS has guided these for nearly twenty years and our knowledge of the mountains will add security and enjoyment to your adventure plans. Rates vary with the group size and the routes/mountain guided. | |

Introduction to Ice Climbing Learning to climb on frozen waterfalls and Alpine ice routes involves a progression from snow climbing to highly technical skills for steep, continuous pitch of water ice. Cramponing technique, the use of tools, anchors for snow and ice, placement of protection, setting belays, "reading" the ice and route-finding. An excellent preparation for expeditions itinerary! We've got all the latest gear and we know how to use it. There's no better introductory ice course anywhere! |

Advanced Ice Climbing Skills/Expedition Training As spring plans finalize for that extended trip to Aslaska or South America (or, wherever), take advantage of our collective experience to prepare in every way possible. |

| SKI MOUNTAINEERING | |

The skill of the winter mountaineer on skins require years to learn and master, however, the process never ends. Experience must be coupled with formal education to acquire those technical skills efficiently and safely. Aspen Expeditions specializes in the high country winter environment! All aspects of ski mountaineering are presented in our program.
Ski Mountaineering I is the introduction. Familiarization with specialized bindings, climbing skins, avalanche beacons, rescue equipment, layered clothing, emergency shelters, and orienteering are highlighted. Intermediate/Advanced alpine skiing skills are required Ski Mountaineering II presents the reality and challenge of this sport - Searching for the best skiing by the safest route; descending or connecting summits with interesting and somewaht technical traverses. Advanced skills involving glacier travel, crevasse rescue, the use of ice axes, crampons, etc. prepare the aspiring mountaineer for continuous days above treeline with the most modern, lightweight style. Avalanche Forecasting for Ski Mountaineering Aspen to Crested Butte (4 day Haute Route) - The Aspen "Classic" high traverse to our closest sister city. Follow alpine terrain to Crested Butte via Pearl Pass (12,700 ft.) and the Friend's Hut. This route is the most spectacular, with classic ski descents everywhere. The charter flight back to Aspen "ices the cake!" Elk Range Traverse (Haute Route) - New frontiers - a haute route in our own back yard!
Chamonix - Zermatt Haute Route the Classic - This is the 'original', most famous ski tour of the European Alps; connecting Chamonix, France with Zermatt, Switzerland. We cross 12 passes on glaciated terrain with hut destinations each night. The trip is a total of 12 days with 3 days preparing and skiing the Vallee Blance and the Grand Montets in Chamonix, France.
