EMS Climbing School

Our courses are designed for anyone interested in learning the art of technical rock climbing; from the person who has no experience, to the seasoned climber who has specific skills or techniques he or she wants to develop further. Learning from an expert climber is the easiest and safest method of acquiring climbing experience. This experience, coupled with an understanding of the technical aspects of climbing, will help the individual develop the good judgment that is so important when confronting any of the numerous dangers inherent in mountaineering. Safety techniques are emphasized in all our classes; however, we stress that a climber's best equipment is his or her good judgment. All courses are taught by the professional instructors of the EMS Climbing School, a school that has been in operation for twenty-eight years, and is fully Accredited by the American Mountain Guides Association. Reservations are required for all of our courses and they are available seven days a week. Locations in North Conway, NH, Rumney, NH, New Paltz, NY, Lake Placid, NY, Boulder, CO, West Hartford, CT.

Standard Instruction

SINGLE DAY LESSONS (Basic/ Intermediate)
BASIC ROCK LESSON - This one-day course is an introduction to the fundamentals of technical rock climbing. It is intended for people with no technical climbing experience, or those who need to brush up on their techniques. The instruction covers in depth the various equipment used, knots, belaying and the techniques for moving on the rock. This phase of the lesson is not purely demonstration, but emphasizes student involvement and hands-on learning. Students then complete one or more climbs and learn how to rappel. The intent of this course is to have the student learn what is necessary to take some personal responsibility while climbing. We don't want to just show you how; we want you to learn. On completion of this course, a student is ready to start into our Intermediate level. *We strongly recommend that at least one Intermediate Lesson be taken on the day following the Basic Rock Lesson in order to reinforce all the techniques learned. Maximum 3 students per instructor. Instruction available 7 days a week in NH, NY, CT, CO.

INTERMEDIATE ROCK LESSON - These courses are for people who have previous technical experience, or have been through our Basic Rock Lesson. Intermediate Lessons are an open level of instruction, and any number of individual lessons may be taken in order to reach a desired level of competence. All our Intermediate Lessons are taught on multi-pitch rock climbs from 200 to 1200 feet long. Here we work on progressively sophisticated climbing techniques: how to move on the rock correctly and efficiently, how to handle the rope and gear properly, and how to protect the entire party with safe belay anchors and running protection. Maximum 3 students per instructor. Instruction available 7 days a week in NH, NY, CT, CO. (Course length can range from 1 to 5 days.)

SPECIALIZED COURSES

GUIDED CLIMBS/ ALPINE ROCK (NH)
The Climbing School offers guided ascents of specific climbs in spectacular alpine settings. These climbs require previous climbing experience as the level of commitment is much higher (and so are the rewards!). Routes such as Cannon Cliff's striking Whitney-Gilman Ridge (5.7) or the Pinnacle Buttress (5.7) on Mt. Washington - these are some of the real prizes awaiting New England climbers. Heading off on an Alpine Route makes for a "full" day, so be prepared! Maximum 2 students per instructor. Instruction available 7 days a week.

THREE-DAY LEARN-TO-LEAD PROGRAM (NH)
This course is designed to help those who want to learn the skills necessary to lead climbs on their own. Maximum 3 students per instructor. Instruction available 7 days a week.
TWO-DAY SELF-RESCUE PROGRAM (NH)
This intensive seminar is designed to give you the technical knowledge to extricate yourself or your partner from awkward or unanticipated climbing situations. The program covers sophisticated systems, improvised from available gear, that can be employed by either leader or second. The information provided in this course is mandatory for anyone planning to pursue climbing on their own. Participants in this course must have previous leading experience. ECUADOR, BOLIVIA, ARGENTINA
Join us on a high-altitude expedition to some of this hemisphere's greatest peaks. Our 18-day trip will aim for three big summits, including Cotopaxi (19,300') and 20,700' Chimborazo -- higher than any peak in North America.
