Jackson Hole Mountain Guides

Rock Climbing and MountaineeringWelcome to the climber's world. The mountain world and the sport of climbing are undergoing rapid and dramatic changes which offer exciting challenges to outdoor enthusiasts. Today's climber can choose from a rich array of climbing styles and areas. With the exception of extreme altitude, the North American continent contains the most diverse and spectacular geography for mountaineering.

Our locations are worth boasting about. Jackson Hole Mountain Guides is unique in the variety of terrain in which we operate. Our headquarters is in the northern Rocks, in the midst of the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, the last intact wilderness ecosystem in the lower forty-eight. Within this splendid region are Grand Teton National Park, The Wind River Mountains of Wyoming, and the Beartooths of Montana. Theses ranges harbor America's finest alpine peaks. We have been guiding in these regions for decades. Our ability and knowledge of this area are unmatched. We are the only guide service offering year-round outdoor opportunities for all ability levels. Besides our renowned summer climbing program, we offer winter mountaineering, ice climbing, and back-country and hut skiing. Our rock climbing courses also take place in the parks of Joshua Tree, Red Rocks, Devil's Tower, Needles, City of Rocks, and the east side of the Sierra Nevada.

General Course Information

Mountain Hut in WinterThe depth of experience which defines each of us as a climber is the foundation from which our future safety and success grows, and this is true for the beginner as well as the most traveled mountaineer. Our courses are a continuing series of ascents designed to build on this basic premise.
Our introductory programs provide you with important practical training and instruction. As soon as progress allows, we take these new skills onto the best climbs available. Here we "learn by doing," and enjoy vigorous and splendid mountain days as well. Our courses are for the person who wants to become an independent climber, or anyone with a sense of adventure and the motivation to climb.

All Jackson Hole Mountain guides' trips are most enjoyable when you've taken the time to prepare your body for the rigors of mountaineering. Sustained aerobic exercise such as hiking, biking, and jogging prior to your arrival is recommended.

Mountaineering Courses

The Joy of the MountainsThe deepest satisfactions come from an ability to confront all the challenges mountains can offer, and to do this with wisdom and confidence. Rock climbing is one facet of the overall picture. Much more is required to be a fully rounded mountaineer. Skill and knowledge on snow and ice are indispensable tools. Route finding and hazard evaluation demand vigilance and judgment born of experience. Problems relating to altitude are unavoidable, and strategies to combat them are mandatory. Succeeding within this complex world is the ultimate goal of our Mountaineering Courses.

Rock Climbing Courses

Our Rock Climbing Courses emphasize techniques for rock climbing problems in their infinite variety - cracks, chimneys, face and friction moves. Master modern rope and equipment management and related safety considerations. The first climbing days involve instruction and practice on shorter crags. Our goal is that, in the following days, we ascend several significant multi-pitch routes with difficulties of a sustained level. Time is devoted to intensive bouldering so that you gain an appreciation of conditioning and training for success on difficult rock. Take this opportunity to tackle "extreme" moves in a non-threatening situation - an excellent step towards increased confidence and personal ability.

Summer Ice Climbing Courses

Classic ice climbs take place in the high mountains when they are in optimal condition later in summer. If you are experienced on rock this is your opportunity to spend a long summer week learning modern ice techniques. You will ascend several classic ice routes.

Guided Climbs

Our many outstanding climbing areas abound in routes that engage and delight all levels of climbing enthusiasts. Scheduled by request on a private or small-group basis, the day is tailored to your abilities and desires. If you wish to have partners and give us sufficient lead time, we can arrange compatible groups.

For a number of reasons, even capable, experienced climbers may choose to work with a guide. A guide helps you to make the best use of your time when visiting a new region. A guide is a reliable partner if you'd like to try a particular route that you've never felt quite ready to challenge.
