Miramar and the Sea of Cortez | The Bay of Angels | Trip Specifics | The Guides

SEA KAYAKING BAJA
Location: Sea Of Cortez - Trip Name: Bay Of Angels.

Kayaks on the Bay of Los Angeles    The "Bay of Angels" is a premium Baja sea kayaking trip, including 4 days on the water, paddling through the most significant group of islands in the Sea of Cortez.

The bay protects over 15 little islands and its waters are frequented by over a dozen species of whales and marine mammals, including the year-round residents, Finback & Blue whales.

No international airfare is required for the Bay of Angels kayaking trips.
The expedition begins in the small fishing village of “Bahia de Los Angeles” of Baja Norte and you can get there by driving yourself from San Diego with a rental car (see info below).
The Bay of Angels are sea kayaking trips fit for beginners or advanced, perfect getaways for those seeking off-the-beaten-track paddling destinations.

"While paddling with Miramar, some sort of wild life entertainment is almost always at hand"
-THE NEW YORK TIMES-

Whale Watching in Baja    Our Baja sea kayaking trips are the result of extensive exploration of the most significant bays, islands, and beaches, of the Baja peninsula.
All our trips include island camping, hiking, snorkeling and an abundance of sea life.

From the Bay of Angels across the Sea of Cortez, islands form a natural barrier against the tidal flow, gently up-welling and mixing the plankton-rich sea floor.
Plankton is the food base for little fish & crustaceans which in turn is food for bigger fish and so on.
The result is a perfect ecological chain of sea life.

More than 50 species of marine birds including Blue Footed Boobies, Frigate birds, Ospreys, and Brown pelicans inhabit the islands.
The blue waters of the Sea of Cortez are home to more than a dozen species of whales, dolphins and sea lions. With a little luck we may encounter a Finback or even a Blue whale, the largest animal on Earth.

Bahia de Los Angeles - The Bay of Angels - A Sea Kakayer's Mecca

LOCATION: Bahia De Los Angeles (The Bay of Angels) is located on the eastern coast of the Baja California Peninsula, midway between the border and La Paz, about 350 miles south of San Diego.

15 islands clustered in the protected waters of the bay, and off the beaten tourist path, offer the security of unexposed crossings; none of the islands are more than four miles from each other, making the Bay of Angels an absolute kayaker’s paradise.

It is as if someone put all the elements together to make this a prime location for a warm-weather kayaking expedition. It’s the kind of place you fall in love with at first sight. Some people call it the sea kayaker's Mecca.

BAY OF ANGELS:$790 (6 Days and 5 Nights)

NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY: As in many casual athletic activities, a positive attitude and good health are more important than being in top shape. Paddling (3-4 hours day) will not be strenuous, though regular exercise before your trip would add to your enjoyment.

INCLUDES:  Two hotel nights in the Bay of Angels (double ocp.), all meals while camping, guides, tents, kayaks and all equipment.

EXCLUDES: Transportation to the Bay of Angels, alcoholic beverages, meals in town (to allow for individual choice), insurance of any kind, personal items, sleeping bag & pad.

NOTE: Upon reserving your sea kayaking Baja trip, we will send you a “Clothing and What-to-Bring” list.
You will also receive an Invoice/Confirmation, a Medical form, a Liability Release form and Driving Directions.

TRIP DESCRIPTION: After learning the easy-to-master kayaking skills from our friendly, expert guides, we will travel self supported, in a small group (average 6 to max. 8) and spend 4 days paddling from island to island, exploring hidden coves and taking lunch breaks on remote beaches.
With a little luck we may encounter the Finback or Blue whales who frequently cross the bay in search of food. Although smaller in size, Brides and Minke whales are also common encounters and just as exciting. Or, maybe even a pod of Bottlenose dolphins or the playful California sea lions.
We will kayak an average of 3 to 4 hours each day, doing most of the paddling in the morning and leaving the afternoon for snorkeling and hiking the island's short trails, or just relaxing.
Each night we will set our tents on a different island and camp under a warm-starry-sky.
If you have dreamed of a paddling paradise, the Bay of Angels is the place for you.

GETTING THERE: Your journey begins in San Diego-USA, the gateway to the best sea kayaking Baja destinations, and features great site seeing en-route to the Bay of Angels.

No international flight from the U.S. to Baja is needed (hence, no international airfare added to your trip cost); Getting to the Bay of Angels requires self-transportation. You can rent a car from the San Diego airport or, if you live in California, drive your own.

How are the roads in Baja? The NAFTA agreement brought drastic improvements to tourism and traveling conditions in Baja:   "A midsize sedan is well suited for the Hwy Mex 1. The road is in very good condition, paved all the way to Cabo San Lucas, and it’s virtually impossible to get lost." - THE NEW YORK TIMES -

How long is the drive? The total drive time from the San Diego airpot to the Bay of Angels is about 8 hours. To make your drive more enjoyable we suggest starting your drive Saturday afternoon and spend the first night in Ensenada. We'd be happy to send you travel suggestions by E-mail request.

Is it easy to find the Bay of Angels? Very easy. Upon reservation, among forms and other information we will send you detailed driving directions. “Mexican Highway 1” (MEX 1) is the only one road that goes from San Diego all the way to the end of the Baja peninsula. It’s virtually impossible to get lost.

Where will I rent the car from? A mid-size car rents for about $250/week at the San Diego airport, making the Bay of Angels our most cost-effective sea kayaking Baja adventures, especially if your party is of two or more people.

How much time off do I need from work? The Bay Of Angels trip runs from Sunday to Friday, so you only need five days off from work: You can leave San Diego in the morning and arrive in Bahia de Los Angeles that afternoon. Or, if you want to take your time and enjoy the scenic drive, give yourself an extra day.

Where will I leave my car while I'm away on the trip? The vehicles will be parked at the private hotel where you will spend first and last night, and will be absolutely safe.

CAR RENTAL: The following car-rental companies will rent vehicles for driving into Baja California and some will provide you with mandatory Mexican auto-insurance. Most of these rental companies are at the San Diego airport (or, they offer courtesy airport pick-up).

AVIS; (619) 688-5063 or (619) 688-5000: Reliable & professional, they also offer the needed Mexican auto insurance at the airport office location.
AIRPORT RENT-A-CAR; (800)987-7725 or (619)295-1555: Walk-ins only. No advanced reservations, but they have a big fleet of cars. They offer Mexican auto insurance at their airport office.
GALAXY RENT-A-CAR; (888) 988-0888: Small company offering great rates; Odd enough, sometimes they are reluctant to rent vehicles for Baja (try mentioning Miramar Adventures, talk nice:)
   DOLLAR; (800)800-4000 or (866)434-2226
   CALIFORNIA BAJA RENT-A-CAR; (619) 470-7368:
Somewhat pricey but they offer many vehicle options as well as remote drop-offs.
   ENTERPRISE (800)325-8007 or (619)294-3313.

We encourage you to further research car rental companies and prices. We suggest calling some of the other major car rental companies listed in the yellow pages directory like Hertz, Budget, etc. Although some of them do not rent vehicles for driving into Baja, they change policies quite often and it's worth researching for possible better rates.

We spend a great part of our time out of the office, paddling. We are not always around a phone. However, we do check our e-mails daily from wherever we are. If you have questions about our sea kayaking Baja trips the best way to contact us is by E-mail.

CUSTOM TRIPS:  If you would like to bring your family or a group of friends, we will be happy to accommodate trips with different departure dates, and itineraries of your choice.
Custom trips are our specialty. We will work with you to arrange expeditions according to your needs. Prices will vary according to the trip length and group size.

About the company

We are an adventure travel company, based and registered in the sea kayaking mecca of the country: Seattle - Washington. Our specialty is guided sea kayaking and whale watching adventures in Baja California, Mexico.
We have decided to stay small and cater our service to groups no larger than 8 (except custom and private trips) We are committed to provide personalized, quality trips for our travelers in the best adventure spots we know.
Miramar Adventures started with Florin Botezatu the founder of the company, and his idea of a small kayak-adventure guiding outfit. He has over twenty years of outdoor adventure experience in sea kayaking, rock climbing, and trekking and has led expeditions through Europe, Baja, and the US. He has extensive sea kayaking experience in the Sea of Cortez and Pacific Northwest.

YOUR GUIDES:
A good sea kayaking guide can be like a favorite high school teacher or the funniest waiter you ever experienced. Guides are professional leaders, safety experts, storytellers, scientists, comics and chefs, all rolled into one. Most guides are biologists, geologists and historians wrapped in a friendly, deeply tanned package, so if you are a nature or a history buff, or just want to hone your kayaking skills, don't be shy about asking questions.
