Wilderness Pack Trips | Snowmobile Trips | A Typical Week at Rimrock Ranch

ABOUT RIMROCK DUDE RANCH

Rimrock is a second-generation, family-owned and operated ranch. Gary and Dede Fales are continuing a 40 year history, started in 1956 by Gary's parents, Glenn and Alice Fales.

Rimrock Dude Ranch Cabin We are proud of our history of entertaining guests, some who have vacationed with us for over 30 years. At Rimrock Dude Ranch, we entertain families, friends and singles. Our small size (about 30 guests), makes it possible for everyone to be on a personal and first name basis. We are proud of our weekly schedule, and think it, along with our small size, is one of the reasons for our prolonged popularity.

Rimrock Ranch is located only 26 miles from the East Entrance of Yellowstone National Park, on the border of the Shoshone National Forest and nestled on Canyon Creek in the middle of the Absaroka Range of the Rocky Mountains.

You will enjoy modern cabins, with private baths, and maid service. We have nine different cabins from small, for just a couple, to large cabins which are comfortable for large families. The cabins are nestled on both sides of Canyon Creek which runs through the middle of the ranch. Our hearty meals are served family style in the ranch dining room. We have several barbeques during the week.

WILDERNESS PACK TRIPS

Wilderness Pack Trips:

Taking a horseback packtrip into Wyoming's wilderness can be one of the most rewarding vacation experiences a family, group of friends, or an individual can have. You will see the backcountry on horseback, much as the early explorers and mountain men did, through country virtually unchanged since it was discovered. Outfitting and guiding guests into the mountains is our business and there is no trail, pass or creek in this country that we have not ridden. We would like to share our knowledge and love of the wilderness with you.

The best wilderness trips are from 5 to 7 days. This allows enough time to put you into some incredible backcountry. We do offer shorter trips for groups who want to add a small mountain horseback trip to their ongoing western vacation. Our pack trips are planned on an individual basis to suit the personal needs of your group. We can also accommodate individuals by adding you to another group.

Our guides are all experienced fishermen, will assist you, and show you where "the big one" might be. Most of our cooking is done over an open campfire. We serve good wholesome meals that include steak, pork chops, chicken, spaghetti, fish, fresh salads and fruits.

Most of our campsites are the same sites used by the early mountain men and Indians. We use modern yet traditional camping gear designed for efficiency, safety and comfort.

Pack Trip I*
(July 18th - July 25th)

This trip leaves Cody on July 18th and ends at Jackson on July 25th. Four days spent on the incredibly scenic south fork of the Shoshone River await you. Sights include the historic Needle Creek Mining District (where even Buffalo Bill had claims and enjoyed terrific fishing). Abandoned now and locked up in the wilderness, this area is a nice place to have lunch. Bliss Creek Meadows, where the notorious horse thief was gunned down by the Fremont County posse in the late 1800's, is also on this trip. The Cat Walk, Moose Bog, and Crescent Pass are other interesting sights on the journey.

Pack Animals crossing river After leaving the Washakie Wilderness and the Shoshone National Forest, you will enter Bridger Teton Forest and the Teton Wilderness at the headwaters of the Buffalo Fork of the Snake River. You will spend the next 4 days riding places like Bear Cub Mountain, Pendagraph Meadows, and Turpin Meadows. The trip will end at Turpin Meadows, 55 miles NE of the town of Jackson Hole, Wyoming. We will escort you to your room or deliver you back to Rimrock Ranch - whichever you prefer.

COST:
$175 per person per day
.
A $175/person deposit is required to reserve a trip. A seven day trip is six nights in the wilderness. Trips include: food, experienced guide, horse wrangler, mountain horses, a cook, 5 man pop-up tents (2 people to a tent), all government permits and fees.

Pack Trip II*
(July 25th - August 1st)

This 8 day progressive pack trip leaves Turpin Meadows (near Jackson Hole) on July 25th. You'll head north up the Buffalo Fork River through prime fishing country. As you pass over Two Ocean Pass, you'll see where the small stream hits a rock and splits. Half of the stream (Pacific Creek) flows south into the Snake River; then into the Columbia River; and eventually into the Pacific Ocean, 1600 miles from its origin. The other half (Atlantic Creek) enters the Yellowstone River; then runs into the Mississippi River; flows into the Gulf of Mexico and finally reaches the Atlantic Ocean - over 3300 miles away. Where the stream splits is a beautiful spot for lunch. Next you'll move on to Bridger Lake and the world famous Thorofare Country. A layover day will allow you the opportunity to either ride to the top of the Trident Plateau for a great view of the southeast corner of Yellowstone Park (also three states are visible - Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming).

Or if you want the chance to catch 3lb. cutthroats, you can fish Bridger Lake, the Yellowstone River, or the Thorofare River; which are all close to camp. The next night we spend camping in Yellowstone near the confluence of the Yellowstone River and Mountain Creek where again you can perfect your fly fishing skills. In this area you should have your best opportunity to see the most birds and flowers. And in Eagle Creek Meadows you'll find an old gold mine. After crossing Eagle Pass and dropping down to Eagle Creek Flats Trailhead, your pack trip will be at an end. We will then transport you to Rimrock Ranch or Jackson Hole - whichever you prefer.

SNOWMOBILING TRIPS

We are located only a half hour drive from the East Entrance to Yellowstone Park, which makes us an ideal location to see the "Winter Wonderland" in Yellowstone National Park. Our guides spend most of the year working for us in the rugged Yellowstone area, and are knowledgeable in history and natural wonders of the park. We are very flexible and can plan your days with us according to your interests.

3 Day Snowmobiling Package at Rimrock Ranch
Snowmobiling at Rimrock Ranch 1st Day - Lake Butte. Ascend 8500 foot Sylvan Pass. You descend the west slope of the Absaroka Range - named for the Crow Indians. The vastness of Yellowstone Lake opens before your eyes. Imagine, Yellowstone Lake occupies only the SE quarter of the Yellowstone Caldera and it is 280 sq. miles in size! Several 10,000 foot peaks are visible on this trip including Mt. Doane, Avalanche Peak, Cody Peak, and Top Notch Peak. While eating lunch at Lake Butte you may see otters feeding on fish they have caught with coyotes prowling around the fringes. The photographic vistas are memorable. Later today you will visit the Buffalo Bill Historical Museum.
2nd Day - Canyon. Passing over Sylvan once more the journey continues to Fishing Bridge. You will notice the solitude of the East Entrance and have the chance to view elk and bison who also enjoy the light traffic from this side of Yellowstone. The Yellowstone River, Sulphur Caldron, and Mud Volcanoes are on the next leg of the journey. Arriving in Canyon for lunch, you will probably see elk along the trail. On the return trip, a stop to view the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River is a must. The Lower Falls drops 308 feet. The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone River plunges 1000 feet. The river's yellow banks give the Falls its name.

3rd Day - West Thumb. Travel the edge of Yellowstone Lake, North America's largest mountain lake. It is 20 miles long by 14 miles wide and 390 feet deep at its deepest point. The lake bottom temperature never rises above 42 degrees. At West Thumb Geyser Basin, you will walk the boardwalk through the geyser basin. A shallow thermal system underlies this more recent caldera within the Yellowstone Caldera. Elk and bison can be seen along this route.

COST:
$975 per person

(includes: snowmobile, suit, meals & lodging at Rimrock Ranch, brown bag lunches for day trips, guide, permits for Yellowstone Park, and pass to the Buffalo Bill Historical Museum)

SCHEDULE FOR YOUR WEEK AT RIMROCK RANCH

SUNDAY
This is arrival day. Once you are settled into your cabin, you can learn your way around, and meet the help and other ranch guests. We'll have a picnic dinner on the lawn.

MONDAY
After breakfast, cowboys fit your saddle and introduce you to your horse. Both are yours for the week. Following lunch, you can go on one of the rides going different directions. On Monday evening a cowboy singer entertains us around the campfire.

TUESDAY
An early get-up is followed by a one-and-a-half hour ride to a hardy cowboy breakfast, which cooked over a campfire, never tasted better. After lunch, we take you to Cody for the "River Float", a moderate white water rapid trip. The whole ranch goes to the "Cody Night Rodeo" after dinner.

WEDNESDAY
Depending on the weekly makeup of our guests we plan a ranch softball game. We have been playing softball in sagebrush for years and it is a great fun. After lunch, we ride to Lost Creek. At dinner, we have a steak cook-out on the lawn.

THURSDAY
By now you are ready for "all day" ride to Table Mountain. Pack animals carry our lunch which is cooked over a campfire. We also have half- day ride. After dinner we have a fishing contest at the ranch pond. Everyone likes to participate.

FRIDAY
This is Yellowstone Park day. It takes us all day to tour the "Lower Loop" of the Park to show you Yellowstone Lake, Old Faithful, the Geyser Basins and more, including various Park wildlife. If you've already seen the Park, you can spend the day in Cody and visit one of the worlds best western museum, the Buffalo Bill Historical Center. Riding is also an option.
