| Stonehearth Outdoor Learning Opportunities (SOLO)'s mission is to provide opportunities for the highest quality education in an open forum which promotes the exchange of information and ideas.
Essential components of all SOLO programs, regardless of their specific focus, are the development of judgment and leadership skills and the promotion of community awareness with a focus on communication. |
| SOLO strives to continually offer intensive, innovative, and top-notch wilderness medical and rescue programs.
Commitment to teaching and the active practice of wilderness and medical skills are paramount to SOLO instructors. |
| Providing wilderness medical training since 1976, SOLO operates the only full-time wilderness medicine, rescue, and leadership school in the world. With a campus in Conway, New Hampshire and training sites around the world, SOLO has trained more than 50,000 people from organizations like Outward Bound, National Outdoor Leadership School, Nantahala Outdoor Center, as well as high school and college outing clubs, United States Forest Service, and the Department of Defense. SOLO has been featured in magazine and newspaper articles, PBS and TBS programs, and national conferences including AEE and WMS. |
| Advanced Leadership and Emergency Care (ALEC) |
| We designed Advanced Leadership and Emergency Care for the outdoor enthusiast who needs to combine the knowledge of emergency medicine in the backcountry with the leadership skills that can so often prevent a medical emergency from occurring in the first place and that make it possible to safely manage a group in a multitude of outdoor environments. The leadership component of ALEC is derived from our many years of contact with thousands of trip leaders who have shared their assessments of the strengths and weaknesses of their training. It is also based on the trip-leading experience of our own staff. The level of emergency medical training in the four-week ALEC program is that of Wilderness First Responder. Those students continuing their training with the additional two weeks will be trained to the Wilderness EMT level. |
| Advanced Wilderness First Aid (AWFA) |
| SOLO's AWFA was designed with river guides and part-time trip leaders in mind. Recognizing that these are high-risk activities, a more in-depth training was needed. Two days longer than our basic Wilderness First Aid course, the AWFA delves more deeply into traumatic injuries of the neck and spine, medical emergencies, and more hands-on practice. In addition, it is often used for recertification by those with previous WFR certification. The SOLO SWFA is recognized by the American Camping Association, US Coast Guard, and various guides' licensing boards as meeting their first aid requirement. In conjunction with some SOLO SWFA coursed, it is possible to take the American Heart Association's Heartsaver CPR/Provider A course. |
| Wilderness First Responder (WFR) |
| The Wilderness first responder curriculum uses the principles of long-term care, improvised resources, and varying environmental conditions as the framework for learning.
Created to provide outdoor leaders, guides, rangers, and travelers with the knowledge needed to deal with crises in remote settings, this 80-hour course meets and exceeds all DOT National Standards for First Responder with additional protocols for extended care situations. Like all SOLO programs, the emphasis of the WFR is on prevention and decision-making. |
| Wilderness EMT |
| The Wilderness EMT curriculum expands upon the Department of Transportation's 1994 EMT curriculum to include principles of long-term care, improvised resources, and varying environmental conditions as the framework for learning.
This certification course is designed for outdoor leaders, search and rescue team members, backcountry rangers, rural ambulance attendants, disaster response teams, and others who provide emergency care in remote settings. While hosted at SOLO, students live in Toad Hall Dormitory and eat home-style meals in SOLO's dining room. |

ORCA programs are designed to offer the same "open learning opportunities" environment that SOLO is known for, but in a non-medical venue. ORCA programs have been created in response to our students' growing interest in wilderness education and wilderness arts programs that would compliment the medical training already received from SOLO.
All of our ORCA programs share the educational philosophy that staff presentations should be balanced by student practical work. The programs' formats are set up so that students can experience thoughtful and comprehensive presentations by SOLO staff on appropriate wilderness skills for the given program followed by opportunities for students to practice those skills and receive coaching and evaluation on their performance. Cost for each course includes comfortable dormitory-style lodging, bountiful family-style meals, instructional fees, and all materials for course projects. |
| BASIC SNOWCRAFT |
| This three-day course is designed to add to the skills of the winter wilderness traveler and camper. While the construction and use of basic snow shelters is the focus, topics ranging from basic avalanche awareness to the making of snow saws and igloos are included.
Cost: $300 |
| The Aleutian Sea Kayak (ASK) Program: |
With the increasing popularity of Sea Kayaking, we have encountered a number of paddlers who would like to have a more intimate knowledge of the kayak. To meet this need, we created the A.S.K. (Aleutian Sea Kayak) course, a program for people with some experience paddling who would like to build their own boats while developing a more fundamental understanding of kayak design and function. Programs range from a two-week module where students build the frame of their boats and then take them home and skin them on their own to a four-week basic course where the basic boat is completed leaving only some finishing touches to be done by students on their own. There is also a six-week complete course where students leave with finished boats ready for the water. For more information (including costs), call or write for our A.S.K. brochure. |
| The ESSENTIAL SNOWSHOER |
| This five-day course will concentrate on the construction and use of snowshoes. Participants will learn the fundamentals of travel in the winter environment including use of map and compass, emergency bivouac, and preventive medicine. The course will culminate in each student's making his or her own pair of Yukon-type snowshoes. Daily classes and shop sessions will be held on the rustic SOLO campus. If the weather cooperates, we will take every opportunity to be outside practicing showshoeing skills on the beautiful backcountry trails that surround SOLO.
Cost: $500 |
| The ESSENTIAL BOX |
| A common problem that many of us face is storage - particularly for those of us with more mobile lifestyles. Many of our students have commented on the rope-handled wooden sea chests that some of our staff make to store their own tools, sleeping bags, and outdoor clothing. We have heard, "I wish I could do that." Well, now that wish can become a reality.
Come spend three days with us and learn basic joinery, the skills of making hand dovetails and rope handles, and the secrets of finishes and varnishes. If anyone is thinking of furnishing a cabin, solving a storage problem in an attractive way, or simply getting into furniture making, this course is a must.
